The Downfall Of Service Industries

Many things are leading to the downfall of the service industry. Things like entitlement, get rich quick schemes, laziness, unskilled workforce, and just general stupidity of people are among the few things I see.

But above all is people have no faith in their own abilities. They turn to coaches that are getting rich by draining a society that has no back bone. Instead of teaching how to do a service or run a service business, these "coaches" are making the industry dependent on them. This in turn makes the coach rich and the consumer an addict waiting for the next injection of knowledge that the coach or dealer is willing to give to them.

I believe until we can rid the industry of these so called experts, coaches, or dealers, we will continue to see a downfall in the quality and pride that service industry owners put out. We will see the general public continue to lose faith in the service providers and turn to things offered by technology to fill the gap.

Now don't get me wrong. There is a time to get help and to use a coach. But it should be a way to build and not become a addiction. If a coach is saying you implement my ideas I will make you rich, successful, or happy they are probably going to make you broke, dependent, and miserable.

If they are mentoring as a way for them to retire or as a means to buy a new car, watch, or even put another notch in their belt then you are being scammed. If they are promising you the universe and you are willing to follow them, then you are part of the problem.

The honest truth is it is up to you to make your business succeed. If you fail they will not be going hungry or doing without. That is one of the reasons I charge for my guidance at times. The difference is I am willing to admit I am no expert and I am only capable of showing you the things that have worked for me and my business. My theory is I help you and in turn you help someone else. I realized a long time ago I can learn as much from the people I am helping as they can learn from me.

Technology has grown by leaps and bounds. It is a time when only our imagination can stop us. Whether we like it or not the world has changed. Yes we are still playing the same game but the setting and the rules have changed. Can the game be won? I like to think so.

Now I could take the time to go down memory lane and talk about rotary phones, reading a map, encyclopedias, and even Polaroid cameras. But I don’t see the need we all know that these thing are a distant memory.

But I will talk about how the one thing we should never let technology take over is human touch. Yes a computer can figure a estimate, make a phone call, even be programmed to do the work at times. But a computer is unable to feel passion, compassion or look at anything beyond a programmed set of numbers. People seem to underestimate the power of a handshake or even a hug. The power of looking a customer square in the eyes and debating a price.

I hope that I am not around when technology finds a way to replace what I consider to be the greatest computer ever made. The computer that has been studied since the beginning of time. The computer that is still unlocking its uncharted potential daily. The computer that operates on feelings and compassion. Many have attempted to copy this computer but no one has been able to duplicate it as of yet. The human brain.

So my personal suggestion is use GPS to find the job, use Google to price the job, use technology to accomplish the job. But in the end use the handshake or a hug to close the job.
